I first ‘met’ Kathy on Twitter a long long time ago. By memory she was new. We connected when she retweeted one of my articles and from there I gave her first Follow Friday. Since then we have caught up when I was in New York and begun collaborating on some ventures. She writes, teaches and works PR, meet Kathy.

Wow! I’m honored to be featured as Alex’s “Follow Friday #7”! Alex asked me to write a little bit about myself… Specifically, he asked, “Can you send me a quick few paragraphs on your background, what you do and what makes you cool?”

Well, I don’t know if I’m really “cool,” and I’m also really uncomfortable writing about myself (even though I’ve been making a living as a writer for many years — many more years than I’d like to admit…). So, let me start by thanking Alex for this opportunity, AND also for guiding me through the Twitter maze right from the start, AND for collaborating and sticking with me in creating a new business that we’re launching next week! (Woo-hoo!)

I “met” Alex on Twitter in the spring of 2009. He was the first person to give me a “Follow Friday” endorsement on Twitter and we’ve been following each other ever since. We finally met in person on February 19, 2010 in New York City to sign our business agreement and to chat face-to-face. Like me, Alex likes to focus on the future and move full-steam ahead. I’m looking forward to collaborating with Alex for many, many more years…

More about me: I’m a writer and marketing consultant and I’ve owned and operated my own business, The Write Way, LLC, since 1995. (On September 1, 2010, it’s 15 years that I’ve been working for myself — time has flown by!) In addition to running my business, I’m an adjunct instructor in the communication and journalism department at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. I teach two courses each semester, usually writing courses, mainly to communication and PR majors.

I consider myself lucky: I love working for myself and I love teaching at the college level. I think of the teaching more as “sharing what I do” with my students. I try to share real-world experiences and base the assignments in my classes on what’s happening in the business world. I’m passionate about life-long learning and try to awaken this passion in my students, too. There’s nothing more gratifying to me than to read a students’ evaluations of my class and to hear how they believe they can apply what they’ve learned in my class to their lives and careers. Some (anonymous) quotes from my students:

“All in all, your class rocks and I appreciate you as a teacher… I really enjoy your energy in this class and your teaching style is appreciated and adored because it’s unique and effective. It helps me to stay wide awake.”

“We learned a lot and it was learning that would help our future and prepare us for the real world…”

“Professor Magrino has the experience that made the course relevant… She used examples from her real life that allowed us to have real world education…”

I’m humbled by my students’ evaluations. Like I said before, I consider myself lucky because I get to do what I love to do — and I get the opportunity to “keep things real.” I’m honored and thankful to be able to continue to learn, share and connect with others, including my students, my friends on Twitter, and, of course, Alex.
