Too much noise! Too many channels! Eeek!

I need to begin this blog with an apology. I’ve been exploring North America and not updated here at all! Check my Important Notice to see why. Don’t worry, the identity crisis is over and Kathy and I are nearly ready!

I’m an active member of Twitter, Facebook, Skype and comment many blogs. I’m a casual user of Blip.fm, Friendfeed, OnStartups, Buzz and more. I read about 70 articles per day in my RSS Reader. I’m no longer active on Identi.ca, Plurk, Xing, Ryze, Ning, Myspace and others I’ve probably just forgotten. Tonight I joined Snapgroups.com and Blippy is a temptation I’m resisting.

What point am I trying to make? There are more channels I can be using than I have time to contribute to. And that’s ok.

The temptation is to capitalize on every free channel you can. More channels means more coverage means more sales. However, sales over any social channel are not instant and relationships take time to build (I’ve put 4-5 years into relationships that are only just proving beneficial). It’s better to be known, popular, active and deep in 3 channels than shallow, borderline and occasional in 10.

Resist the temptation. Your biggest limit is time. Sit down, sort out how much time you have and only then figure out what websites to join (and how many).

Alex, These campaigns prove that creativity and good, old-fashioned FUN get people to engage with our brands/products/services. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for the feedback Kathy. I agree, fun and engaging with people on an individual level – how is it that we all forgot about it??

    Cost effective too!

Agreed! There are so many opportunities to be social, but not enough time to be social. It is kind of a paradox. I think sticking to 3 channels is the way to go – as long as you pick 3 platforms that you like using and may have had success with. You are right, it does take time to build relationships with social networking and people should never assume that happens over night.

Exactly. One of my other posts called 'Too many Channels' goes into this. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for dropping by!
